I am Mike Schilt and I am running for School Board for Albany County School District #1

I am a lifelong resident of Laramie, WY, for 63 years. My wife and I have been married 36 years. We have six children that we homeschooled. They are all grown adults now, leading productive lives. I retired from the University of Wyoming after 26 years, with 14 years of experience in various jobs prior to that. I now have a small handyman business doing a variety of things, mostly to help elderly and/or handicapped, but other people as well.

Why am I running for school board? I have been troubled over the last few years with the things going on in our country and state and wanted to get involved wherever I could to hopefully make a difference for the better. Several people approached me regarding running for the school board. I thought that odd since many of them knew that we homeschooled, but then I realized that I have a perspective regarding education that many people don’t. So here we are.

I believe that parents have the responsibility and privilege to choose the education that is best for their children, whether that be homeschool, public, charter, private, or, whatever it may be, it is the parent’s choice. With that, parents should have a voice and a role in what their children are being taught. Parents have a right to know what is being taught or told to their children by teachers, counselors, or any other staff in the school system.

It’s vital that our public school programs teach materials that promote math, writing, communication, reading, and technical skills needed for a Graduate to go on to continued education, employment, military, or trade school. My goal is to get our education system back to the basics of education and to give a voice back to the parents.

Bring decision-making back to Parents and Community

To work with parents/voters/taxpayers to get basic education back into our schools. To keep the issues negatively affecting other school districts out of ours. It will take effort on the part of parents, school board, administration, and teachers to take control of the education of our children, but I believe we can do it.

Adopt policies and setting priorities to achieve its goals

I believe that the school board’s purpose is to set goals and policies that are enforceable and achievable in setting the future goals of our schools. The board must use finances wisely and for educational purposes. There should not be a correlation between cost and quality of education.

Sets student performance standards

I believe we need to educate students to think, problem solve, ask questions, and not fear failure, but to learn from it. We must give them the liberty to learn.

Ethics, Morals, Values

I believe we need to help instill ethical behavior, and basic respect of others. This needs to be instilled at home and reinforced in our schools. I believe that we need to teach students about the rights they have, but just as importantly, and often overlooked, is teaching children that they have responsibilities that go with those rights. They need to know how their actions affect others.

Why Am I Running For School Board?

  • To share my time and vision. As a member of a school board, I have an opportunity to share my business and life experience to benefit the community.

  • To represent different groups in the community and ensure that parents have a voice in making educational and administrative decisions. As a member, I will be a conduit for the concerns and interests of teachers and parents.

  • I will help create stronger ties between the school board and the community we serve.

  • Out of personal interest in preserving and improving the quality of our school system.

  • To help influence the district budget. I can help influence the fiscal health of the district and where voter taxpayer money is spent. To restore, faith, integrity, and transparency within the process.

  • I believe in this Great Country, our Great State and County, and in quality public education for current and future students.

For me, it's all about Family
